5 Questions to Ask Any Security Agency Before You Sign a Contract

Hiring a security agency is one of those decisions that only gets attention when something goes wrong. Most contracts get signed based on price and a confident sales pitch — not on whether the agency can actually stand behind the guards it deploys.

Before you sign anything, these five questions will tell you more about a security vendor than any brochure will.

1. Can you show me your current PSARA license?

This is the question that matters most, and it should be the easiest one for a legitimate agency to answer. The Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 requires every security provider to be licensed by the state, and in Telangana that license is valid for five years before it needs renewal. A licensed agency will produce it immediately, without hesitation. If a vendor is vague, says it's "in process," or can't produce documentation on the spot, treat that as a hard stop — not a minor gap to overlook.

2. Is your license active, or close to expiring?

A license that existed once isn't the same as a license that's valid today. Agencies are expected to begin renewal at least 45 days before expiry — so ask for the expiry date directly, not just proof that a license was issued at some point. A vendor whose license lapses mid-contract can leave you without a legally compliant security provider overnight, and without warning.

3. Do you have a signed training MoU with a certified institute, and can I see your guards' training records?

PSARA licensing requires agencies to partner with a certified training institute to train their guards — covering things like emergency response, conflict de-escalation, and basic protocol. A license proves the agency cleared that bar once. Training records prove the guards standing at your gate actually went through it. Ask for both.

4. What does your background verification process actually look like?

"We verify our guards" is not an answer — it's a claim. Ask how verification is done, what documents are checked, and whether it happens before deployment or after. A serious agency will have a clear, repeatable process they can walk you through in detail. A vague answer here is often a sign that verification is inconsistent, or skipped entirely under time pressure.

5. What happens if something goes wrong on my premises?

This is the question that separates a vendor from a partner. Ask how incidents are reported, how quickly you'll be notified, who's accountable, and what recourse you have contractually. A licensed, well-run agency will have clear answers because they operate under a regulatory framework that demands accountability. An unregistered or loosely run operator often won't — because there's no license on the line to lose.

Why This Five-Minute Conversation Matters

None of these questions are complicated, and none of them should feel like an interrogation. A genuine, compliant security agency will welcome all five, because the answers are exactly what makes them worth hiring in the first place. It's the agencies that dodge, deflect, or don't have documentation ready that reveal the risk you'd be signing up for.
